Isn't it interesting that in Acts 11, at the end of verse 26, it says, "The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch." What I find interesting is the simple thought that the Christians didn't name themselves. But rather, they were called (or named) "Christians" by those watching their lives. Modern society often tries to determine who we are by who we say we are or what we write on a piece of paper. We often times try to determine our worth and value by how others label us. But, this idea was long ago understood by the early church.
The Apostles were called by their actions and not by their name. They were not labeled as Christians because they did not define themselves as such. Instead, they were labeled as such because of their positive actions and humble demeanor.
This idea is so important today that the Roman Catholic Church has a special form to be filled out for baptism and confirmation and one must answer ‘yes’ to all questions about their faith life before being baptized or confirmed into the Church. I’m sure that many Christians would disagree with this notion but it is still an interesting thought nonetheless.
